Flick Review: Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita

When the young actress Teri Malvar nabbed the Best Actress trophy for Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita at the 2013 Cinefilipino awards, the jurors made a very tough yet right decision. May be really right but tough, considering Malvar actually scored a huge upset over the always-notable/best actress-calibrated Nora Aunor of Ang Kwento Ng Mabuti. 

She exactly portrayed the role of a defiant youngster, who suddenly fell romantically to a mysterious-yet-beautiful woman. And this happened at the time where being conservative was the dominating setup, with devotion to Sta. Clara, issues of old customs, and homosexuality plagued as a taboo, as well as same-sex relationships. 

And this story might seemed like a ton of flashback devices, but is actually just part of how this flick rolled. 

While themes depicting these items were gaining critical raves (and sometimes in accidentally bad taste), I must say Direk Sigrid Andrea Bernardo's narrative, though executed in sort of dimmed lighting manner, was a heck of a kind. It put the insightful light on balance, making it a memorable story to contemplate, a memorable film for the entire indie movie field during these years, and a mark on Malvar. Who would thought a 13-year old girl became successful portraying the character that was even more mature than expected? 

Verdict: 8
