The stage was set to the most premier music hall at the southern part of the metropolis, and yours truly was lucky to be given a privilege to cover the monumental event from one of the top alternative rock bands of the country that has been rocking the stage for over the past two and a half decades.
It was actually the night of firsts, for me. Hitting up 19 East was never an easy way for me, but definitely gave me excitement because aside from the always popular 70s Bistro, I have never been into this cozy place that was really intended for live music. Also, it was the first time for me to encounter the six-piece band we know as Truefaith.
In addition to that, it was also the first time I heard a tribute band in Achtung. Little I know it was intended for show bands who dig covers most of the time.
But Achtung? Man, they were donning the peg of U2 in fashion, and making the difference in their musicality through the means of playing U2 songs.
Two bands offered long sets of their signatory craft that defied timeless classics on a Saturday night, especially when Truefaith came up the platform after formally premiering the music video for their 2015 single “Paano Ka Magiging Akin?”
I can say I was really pleased with the outcome of the music video (which is a discussion reserved for another day). Achtung just made me channeled my inner U2 aficionado. And more importantly, witnessing one of the bands I have been listening to since 90s – plus in a long set and in front of around a hundred of attendants (both media and fans) – is such a very enriching experience.
Plus meeting them, especially band vocalist Medwin Marfil, is clearly another notable page for the books. Yours truly managed to do a short interview with him regarding their reactions about the reception of the event, the story behind their music video, and their upcoming plans.
SlickMaster: Good evening, sir. Congratulations for the music video launch. How's the turnout of the event for you guys?
Medwin: I feel so glad. Ang daming tao. Everyone here in the troop is so happy. Thank you for being here, my friend!
S: What was coming to your mind when you execute the music video?
M: I love a lot of movies. Very Stanley Kubrick, mga favorite ko na movie (ni Stanley Kubrick) na Eyes Wide Shut, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and then yung pinaka-favorite ko na horror na British movie of all time, The Wickerman (1973), yun yung nag-influence.
S: So parang it's more of the convergence of the idea?
M: Yeah, it's everything that came to mind. Halo-halo yung dami kong naisip. And then, ang galing kasi nagconnect kami ni direk Genghis Jimenez.
S: The same director who worked on Dahil Ikaw, right?
M: Siya yung director. Ang ginawa lang ni Direk Genghis dati, sa perforance video with this one. And then, Direk Genghis won a MTV award before; MTV indie award for The Late Isabel. So we've worked with him before, and he's really good. And that's why he tasked him to do it kasi he's really a good guy.
S: Apart from the music video, what's the story behind the song itself?
M: As a 44-year old male. hindi na siguro ganun karelevant. But I still think that I can write songs that kids and 20-somethings can relate to. Yung tipong the adventure of love. Kasi you are never too old or too young to experience that venture of love. And the venture of love is like this: Paano mo ba mapapaakit yung tao na minamahal mo, na napupusuan mo?
So yun din. Although Truefaith is like a band that has been since 1983, parang this song is actually relates to everyone. Kaya natutuwa kami, kasi ang reaction sa YouTube (doon sa lyric video) and sa Facebook and everything, the younger ones are experiencing it. It's more of everyone who experience love, not age.
S: Kumbaga, everyone experience it. Doesn't matter if it's old or young?
M: Yes, precisely.
S: So what's next in store for Truefaith?
M: There's gonna be an EP before the year ends, kasama yung Paano Ka Magiging Akin. And the new song The Rain which is available on Spotify and iTunes right now. That's a new single. And we're gonna have an EP under Star Music.
