PlayBack: Autotelic – Laro

01/07/2017 12:52:01 PM

Perhaps if you are a fan of the current wave of OPM bands, you already have noticed this six-piece crew here named Autotelic. Apart from being the darlings of the indie scene, this band evolved from just a simple electromagnetic pop (with resemblances of dance, alternative and J-rock) into sorts of sounds with a much edgier lyricism.

And that speaks why Autotelic has been a standout among other crews (well, they have their own different letters and music anyway). Take their latest single and music video as an example.

Oh hindsight, Laro appears like the second coming of their previous hit in the mid 2010s, Balik; that's if we talk about throwback thingamajigs like childhood games. But the thing is Laro was a heck of a game itself – with imagery and metaphors that defines wordplay in lyrical work. I'm pleased with the pop songwriting skills of Josh Villena with the rest of the band's efforts in arrangement.

But if the single was enough for you to dig, so does its music video. It seems to me that filmmaker Jiggy Gregorio has taken a different approach in making this one compared to his previous projects with bands like MilesExperience, Tanya Markova and other MCA artists like Jason Dy, Juan Karlos Labajo, and Darren Espanto.

The narrative dominated mostly and I think that's what really mattered the most here. Credit him and Pat Tanedo for the effort. Editing was a bit challenging here considering the aesthetics of cinematography and the vision of both director and screenwriters coinciding with each other.

May not be as perfect as it gets but it was more than just perfectly good. Hey, it may be smooth for these guys but certainly it wasn't easy for these guys to pull off a heavy drama in a pop song like Laro. Romantic tear-jerker without the aid of being the obvious cliché. And it doesn't have to be sort of romantic relationship sometimes. That being said, Autotelic has been really on the roll since Gising and is now living up to their identity – that is iyak-sayaw right there.

Verdict: 8.6
