“Martial law is the best thing that happened to the Philippines in 1972. We won’t be the developing country that we are right now if it wasn’t for the Marcoses. Learn your history,” says the social media account without a real name.
For sure, pro-HR netizens will most likely flare up and go beastmode when they read statements like this. But before you run your savage replies and retaliations in the comment section, look at the bigger picture and think if “making patol” online will actually do anything good. Instead of retorting against these faceless mythical creatures who hide behind their screens and keyboards, why don't you log-out, take some time off the internet – or rather, your computers and mobile gadgets – and invite family and friends to go to the theater with you and watch A GAME OF TROLLS, as PETA's martial law musical for millennials – and millenials-at-heart, too – is set to return this October!
Made by the same team that brought you Caredivas, A Game Of Trolls isn't only an ode to Martial Law, but an appeal to the younger generations to #NeverForget the dark history that took away the democracy that the country has attained decades ago and at present, has spawned the same strain of oppressor that is taking our democracy away, especially at the height of the rampant usage of social media. It serves as a reminder on looking beyond the memes and fake news to encourage critical thinking and responsible acting, both online and offline.
The play tackles Hector's sojourn as a professional keyboard warrior for Marshals of History, a pro-Martial Law campaign troll center ran by Bimbam. Being a tactless and detached tough guy in cyberspace, Hector effortlessly infuriates martial law advocates with his insensitive and random unsolicited comments about the victims of this dark political era, making him the top guy in the trolling game. Also as a result, this prompts the “visits” of the Ghosts of Martial Law from the Internet Cloud and reminding him to never forget the struggles of many who dared to liberate the country from dictatorship and eventually managed to do so. Their stories, along with Hector's mother’s,Tere, made him re-examine his involvement in the trolling business.
The role of Hector will be played by Myke Solomon and TJ Valderrama, Bimbam will be played by Vince Lim, and the role of Tere will be reprised by Upeng Galang-Fernandez and Gail Billones. A Game Of Trolls is directed by Maribel Legarda, written by Liza Magtototo and music by Vince De Jesus.
A GAME OF TROLLS will have a limited two-weekend run on 13-14 and 20-12 October 2018 at the PETA Theater Center. For tickets, you may contact PETA at 725-6244 or visit Ticketworld's website. You may also visit our website or send a message to the PETA Theater Center official Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter.
