The Rundown Slam: MWF 6: Noche Buena 2018

12/22/2018 07:50:19 PM

It was a Saturday afternoon full of sporting pride for the University of the Philippines. Earlier in the day saw the squad put up a valiant effort in a Game 1 defeat against Ateneo in the UAAP Finals, and barely an hour later, Manila Wrestling Federation staged its last show for 2018 titled Noche Buena earlier in the month at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni inside UP's Diliman campus.

We have seen Robin Sane ascend to the throne as he defeated Fabio Makisig to become the inaugural MWF Championship in the main event for the ages; living up to the hype of its pre-match storytelling that involves a series of no-holds-barred shoots. Indeed, this feud, no matter how short-lived it may seem, has become one of the best the Philippine wrestling has to offer for the year.

Khayl Sison defeated Sandata in an open challenge, and his antics during and after the contest has elevated his character into sorts of being the most despicable (not only the naughties) heel MWF has made. Hell, he's so mean among anyone in the scene despite being more jologs than the KakaiBros (sorry, bros).

As Rex Aguila emerged to face Sane soon, looks like sooner or later, we will be seeing a new group wreak havoc to the federation come March, eh? Frankie Thurteen and Morgan Vaughn, sent a message during the 4-way dance for the #1 contendership in MWF's lone title; and the two recruited Ashura during another post-match beatdown later in the evening.

Mr. Lucha slo stood tall and beyond excellence when he defeated Jake De Leon and culminated a what has been the classic rivalry between two of the OGs in Philippine wrestling. And the culmination of Sagot Kita went the unusual multi-part movie approach that culminated in a match between the duo of Gigz Stryker and RG. Interesting storyline that wound up being confused in a series of twists and turns. So, the thesis guy is the newest  recurit of Moses faction despite being a bit of enlightened on a defeat.

However, driving away from the usual vignette-driven opening number, MWF made a live Christmas greeting number featuring its creative director William Elvin Manzano delivering an original song and that drove a bit of confusion to me in regards on what will be up to during the show. But save the criticism for the holiday spirit, perhaps.

All in all, MWF still managed to end the year on a high note – just a bit below of my expectations as a fan. In spite of the confusion and miscues, interesting stories made its own sets of preludes as this promotion gears towards the new season by March 2019.

The Verdict: 7.6/10
