Two years since releasing its debut album under MCA Music, pop rock band Autotelic released its second record, a five-track EP titled Takipsilim.
Interesting that the band has flux into a mix of indie pop, new wave and J-rock in most tunes. And sure, Kahit may sound a bit heavier than Hanap, but both are relatively mellow and looks like this six-piece crew is taking no signs of chill anytime. It's like converging their initial sounds for the majority portions with the iyak-sayaw blend we used to hear during their previous album Papunta Pabalik. I think having Jazz Nicolas and his Big Baby Studios definitely gave hem a huge lift in taking a leap of faith.
Another good thing: they finally let go – there are no holdover songs from the previous songs. Well, just a title called Papunta Pabalik. Though it's risky as it seems to have a catchy tune this time around since they have Hindi Alam as the carrying single, and the title track serving as its previous backbone. And frankly, they may sound shorter here (23 minutes), but lacking arc enough for satisfaction – forget the 5:23 long Kahit right there. Takipsilim serves up a great start and Papunta Pabalik was just a so-and-so for the finish, and that probably slowed their momentum by a bit from their 2016 album.
All in all, Autotelic made more of the new and taken some of the old; their sound has grown mature in almost each of its past four records as a band. The only constant thing about Autotelic is the superb lyrical work of its frontman Josh Villena.
The Verdict: 7
