The Scene Around: Pepe Smith Rock Fest

01/05/2019 02:45:30 PM

It was a first Saturday of the month of June 2018, and the stage was set at the Amoranto Stadium in Quezon City as the Pepe Smith Rock Fest finally pushed through after months of long delay. It is first known that this tribute concert was then moved to a later date when this guitarist of Juan Dela Cruz band suffered a stroke in late 2017.

But the question, is it really worth the wait? “Yes” could've been a fitting answer to this question, with modern-day groups like Mayonnaise, Hilera, Todo Pasa, Saydie, Flying Ipis, Imago, Hilera, Tanya Markova, The Chongkeys, plus some legendary acts like Razorback, RJ Jacinto and Johnny Alegre joining the fray.

Yes, they have like 70 bands for almost a day full of jam, but it's unfortunate that this music festival wounded up flopping way – and probably way beyond would expect. Pepe Smith started hours later than the scheduled early morning time slot, and the audience is seemingly nowhere to be found. It was reported that at the end of this big gig, organizers even offered everyone within the vicinity a free entry, and some bands backed out from performing due to time constraints.

Pepe Smith himself performed by the midnight hour with the legendary guitarist Jacinto and his band. It may be raining during the stretch, but it seemed enough to hear the chants for this musician for a minute or so. However, it was only the one high point of all the happenings that transpired during the rock fest/

But beyond the signs of a flopped event, the aftermath shenanigans has sealed its doom: a video made by Pepe Smith himself surfaced over social media and triggered a massive waves and swerves of reactions from fans, from allegations wherein Smith's then-manager didn't pay the bands to a sudden  revelations where Smith got himself losing a lucrative deal with Red Horse.

It is unfortunate that Pepe Smith could've gone down as one of the biggest music events in recent memory; but with the failed marketing and sponsorship strategies plus other mishaps taking place before, after, and even during the production time... damn, it's just sad that the elder rockstar has another stain under his name and somewhat tarnished the culmination of his legendary career as a musician for decades.

Nevertheless, hope everything went better after that unfortunate Saturday of 2 June 2018.
