Sunday Haltfime Showdown

02/09/2019 04:53:26 PM

No, we're not doing any sort of halftime report here. For all we know, this past Sunday saw two things going head to head at the halftime of that Big Game that's more known as Super Bowl LIII.

One of the biggest sporting events in the United States, Super Bowl is the National Football League's (NFL) championship contest and for this year, the New England Patriots emerged victorious against Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, making the former earn its sixth Super Bowl championships – tying with Pittsburgh Steelers as a result.

With the biggest game in American Football reached its halfway point – and on its second historically lowest score of 3-0, entertainment has taken over. Inside the Mercedes Benz Stadium at Atlanta, pop rock band Maroon 5 headlined the Pepsi Halftime show along with rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi, a bold move after receiving a number of rejections from acts following the league's backlash for collusion against their ex-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Certainly didn't help when Adam Levine fired a shot on the current state of rock music today and receiving backlash from colleagues and fans. Ouch.

And it seems to me that the onslaught continues. Boring, I must say, with the bait of nostalgia weren't clicking enough to put up a very good show. Even a Stephen Hillburg tribute wasn't enough to be of help. That probably spared Justin Timberlake from having a top all-time bummer distinction.

On the other state of America, World Wrestling Entertainment staged its second Halftime Heat show – the first in over two decades. And while the '99 edition featured Mick Foley and The Rock in an empty arena match for the World Championship, this year showcased six of the top upcoming stars in sports entertainment that emanate from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.

Beyond the broadcasting time, NXT takeOver pulled off a surprise when a brawl emerged past the main event that spilled towards the backstage. A day later, at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, WWE announced that a six-man tag team match will take place by the following week, and it features the team of Aleister Black, Ricochet, and Velveteen Dream against the trio of Adam Cole, NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano, and NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa. And at the end of what has been an exhilarating acrobatic contest, Black-Ricochet-Dream emerged victorious, planting the seeds of what could lead to a series of main events come NXT TakeOver: New York.

While the wrestling show was an instant spotfest with little buildup made only online and two special events, the hype barely trended. It didn't help that only fans and friends instead of paying fans were around if they really aimed for competition there. I guess they wound up providing an alternative form of entertaining people there, which was a good thing at some point. They definitely stole the show.

And regardless of the numbers, I think THAT's a real halftime show.
