The award-winning musical of 2018 is back for a weekend of performances at Solaire.
Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical, will be on stage on 12-14 July 2019, at The Theatre at Solaire in Paranaque City. This time around, though, the Marites Alava - Yong Foundation will be its presentor; while Joel Lamangan remains its director; and there will be slight changes on the roles; and moreover, on the presentation itself.
While Lamangan hint there will be some tweaks in the upcoming presentation of Bionodo, he kept at mum and let the viewers do the talking come showtime. The story still revolves on the two-decade love affair between Lily and Ah Tiong that started during the 1971 Mid Autumn Festival at Manila Chinatown, with love triangles, political turmoil, racial prejudice and every obstacle along the way.
Shiela Valderrama-Martinez shall reprise the role of Lily, a Lotus Club singer and hopeless romantic who eventually fell in love with a visiting scholar from the Mainland. But fate was not kind to her as she will be involved in a couple of love triangles: (1) her-Ah Tiong-and Jasmine; and her-Ah Tiong-and Carlos.
Arman Ferrer will portray Ah Tiong, a US-based Mainland Scholar who's pragmatic and on the verge of being involved a fixed marriage in his home country. However, his side trip will derail his perspectives on romance when he meets Lily; making himself torn between two lovers in the process.
Noel Rayos will be playing the role of Carlos, Lily's close friend who has a secret affection on her. He is also a local Chinese man who owns the business which Lily and her parents are employs, but eventually become an activist during the time of tough turbulent times in the '70s.
Joining the three main thespians for Binondo are the following: Mariella Laurel (Jasmine); Jim Pebangco, Lorenz Martinez, Khalil Kaimo, Rhapsody Li, Ellrica Laguardia (Koro); Ima Castro (Mrs. Dela Rosa); Ashley Mickaela Factor (Rubi); Dondi Ong (Mr. Chua); Kay Balajadia (Mrs. Chua); Jennifer dela Cruz (Lourdes); Elizabeth Chua (Mrs. Zhang); Russel Magno (Mr. Zhang); Jonel Mojica (Ge Lao); and Philip Deles (Swing).
The ensemble comprises of Philip Deles, Cheeno Uy Macaraig, Carlos Deriada jr.,, Daniel Joseph Cruz, Dusty Suarez, Patrick Paul Clark, Randy Rey, Rence Aviles, Romcel Brinquiz, Roy Iringan, Ryan Caraan, VJ Cortel, Xander Pineda, Janine Tolentino, Julia Chua, Precious Sementilla, and Douglas Nierras Powerdance.
Binondo was written by Ricky Lee, Gershom Chua and Eljay Castro Deldoc; based on the original story by Rebecca Chuaunsu. The songs in this play were written by its musical director and composer Von De Guzman; while its choreography was made by Douglas Nierras. Joey Nombres is manning the lights; while Otto Hernandez for the production design. This is a presentation made possible in cooperation with Fullhouse Asia Production Studios, Inc.
Prior to the staging, Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical bagged six accolades at the 2018 Aliw Awards, namely: Best Stage Director for Musical (Lamangan), Best Composer for Original Musical Theater (de Guzman), Best Ensemble Performance, Best Actress for Musical (Carla Guevarra-Laforteza), Best Actor for Musical (David Ezra), and Best Original Musical Production.
This time around, the second staging of Binondo will be known as a fund-raising project under Maritess Alava-Young (MAY) Foundation, a non-profit foundation formed in 2018 that aims to inspire hope and improve the lives and communities by sharing the power of goodwill and giving. The foundation was said to raise funds to help cancer patients, as well as ongoing efforts for its prevention such as advancement of research, medical social services, or medical education.
MAY Foundation was created by Maritess' husband, Mr. Micky Yong, to honor his beloved wife who passed away to cancer in 2017. Since its inception, the foundation waged partnerships made significant sponsorship and contributions, and waged housing and scholarship programs that benefit people of various needs; including the Ballet Philippines, De La Salle University, and Habitat For Humanity Philippines.
