PlayBack: UNIQUE – Sino

As young as he is, at least his sudden move to fly solo, though tumultuous, paid dividends really well. Once known as the frontman of IV of Spades, the young Unique Salonga shocked the country when he left the pop band and decide to fly aboard solo, which resulted into releasing his debut album Grandma under the newly-born O/C Records, and have one of its tracks as a hitmaker – even before releasing it as a single.

Sino is arguably one of the best songs penned and performed by UNIQUE. For some sorts, it depicted one's quest for love; and its music video somewhat became its living testament of that.

On hindsight, SINO has been either a profile video or Instagram video post due to its squareness overload. But all jokes aside, the black-and-whiteness plus the Lav Diaz style of filmmaking displayed the music video's classical outlook – the evidence of the artist's character in entirety, coupled with the asymmetric vibe that music video director Kean Cipriano promised.

The problem with this, however, is that even if it looks majestic on one part, it can be dull on another, especially with the establishing-like frames, and constant cuts. Perhaps, that stroke a balance to such excellent lyrical work and bass-driven rhythm song.

Regardless, it will fall down as another piece of art by a young wonder kid because of a wonderful song.

Sino is part of UNIQUE's 12-track debut album Grandma, out under O/C Records on late 2018. Its music video is directed by Kean Cipriano and released in March 2019.
