One of the most meaningful and relevant original Filipino plays is back for another run this May. This time, it will take place at a bigger stage.
After making waves last year, Floy Quintos' THE KUNDIMAN PARTY will be staged starting this weekend at PETA Theater Center in Quezon City. This was in part of PETA's Stage Of The Nation campaign, as well as following its success during its staging at UP Playwright's Theater. The play was hailed by both critics and audiences for the seamless weaving of our timeless Kundiman art songs into a plot that involved discontented millennials and Social Media, EJKs and other current socio-political issues.
Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino, together with Frances Makil-Ignacio, Stella Cañete-Mendoza, Jenny Jamora, and Missy Maramara, were recognized for their equally notable performances.
The female Buencamino shall reprise the lead role once again as Maestra Adela, a reclusive voice teacher whose latent nationalism is awakened. Ignacio, Mendoza, and Marama will also return to take their respective roles of Tita Mayen, Tita Helen, and Tita Mitch.
Joining them in this restaging are Miah Canton as Antoinette, a young soprano earnestly searching for her voice, and Soprano Rica Nepomuceno as Melissa, a professional Kundiman singer who desperately wants to be “relevant” again.
Meanwhile, new names are added to the cast of The Kundiman Party. The multi-awarded pianist Gabriel Paguiran will portray Ludwig, Maestra’s accompanist, and veritable sidekick.
Boo Gabunada will act as Bobby Valderama, a young activist who brings Maestra Adela into the volatile world of Social Media. Gabunada is known for his portrayals as Cyrano in “Mula Sa Buwan” and as Emman in “Ang Huling El Bimbo.”
And last but not the least, seasoned veteran Nonie Buencamino shall be reprising Senator Juancho Valderama, Bobby’s estranged father.
The staging of The Kundiman Party at PETA Theater will have its original creators run the show, namely:
Floy Quintos (Playwright)
Dexter M. Santos (Director)
Mitoy Sta. Ana (Production Designer)
Krina Cayabyab (Musical Designer)
Meliton Roxas (Lights Designer)
Nour Houshmand (Assistant Director)
Io Balanon (Technical Director)
Steven Tansiongco (Video & Graphics Designer).
Although not classified as a musical, The Kundiman Party showcases the music from the famous namesake sound, with the help of scoring and arrangements from the Philippine National Artist for Music, Maestro Ryan Cayabyab.
