There's a whole new world coming to Singapore this July.
We have seen Disney reinventing some of
their timeless gems recently; and for this year, the known
Mideast-themed fairy tale has been making waves anew in cinemas. The
live-action movie adaptation is directed by Guy Richie and features
Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud in the title role and Naomi
Scott as Princess Jasmine.
But apart from this musical fantasy film, Aladdin has been a sensation in the world of live theater, too.
In fact, this English-language Broadway Musical is set to hit
Singapore starting 21 July, and it will be their first and only stop
in Asia.
Witness how
Aladdin has become one of today's spectacles with staggering 337
glittering costumes, which feature 1,225 different fabrics, 712
different styles of beads and almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals.
Apart from these whopping wardrobe
numbers, around 40 tons of exotic flying scenery and 60 tons of
automation and staging will be transferred to Singapore in more than
30, 40’ sea containers to recreate the fantasy city of Agrabah
including the colorful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and
his princess daughter Jasmine and the legendary Cave of Wonders.
Meanwhile, Aladdin The Broadway Musical will have a total of 34 actors and actresses performing during its entire run. Greame Isaako will portray the lead
role Aladdin, while Shubshri Kandiah will take on the role of
Jasmine, and Gareth Jobs shall be reprising Genie.
This stellar production is made
possible by these critically-acclaimed people such as music by Tony
Award® and eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the
Beast, Newsies, Sister Act, Little Shop of Horrors), lyrics by
two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little
Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice
(Evita, Aida) and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The
Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and
choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of
Mormon).
This upcoming staging of Aladdin is designed by seven-time
Tony-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, six-time Tony-winning
lighting designer Natasha Katz, two-time Tony-winning costume
designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis.
The production team also includes
illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer, hair designer Josh Marquette and
makeup designer Milagros Medina-Cerdeira. The music team is headed by
music supervisor and music director Michael Kosarin, who also created
the vocal and incidental music arrangements, joined by orchestrator
Danny Troob and dance music arranger Glen Kelly.
First known as one of Disney's top animated gems in the late 20th Century, Aladdin is based
from the centuries-old folktale titled “One Thousand and One
Nights.”
It was on 20 March 2014 when Disney
Theatrical productions staged Aladdin's Broadway Musical edition and
made its premiere at the New Amsterdam Theatre; and from then on, it
quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in
recent memoir; shattering 14 records and welcoming close to 10 million
people across the globe.
Meanwhile, Aladdin's performances at
the Sands Theatre will begin on 21 July 2019. Shows will be from
Tuesdays to Fridays at 7:30PM, Saturdays at 2:00PM and 7:30PM, and
Sundays at 1:00PM and 6:30PM.
