Fête de la Musique hits 25th year in the Philippines!

06/19/2019 12:40:06 AM

It was in June 1982 when music journalist Maurice Fleuret and France's then-Minister of Culture Jack Lang organized the first-ever Fête de la Musique. Usually, citizens of a city or country are allowed and urged to play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public spaces and parks during this special day.

What was once a cultural-driven movement turned out to be a worldwide phenomenon, as other cities follow suit later on. Over the course of time, FDLM has been a yearly thing in over 700 cities and 120 countries.

Translated as The World Music Day and banking on its founding vision of “music everywhere and concert nowhere,” Fête de la Musique reached the Philippine shores in 1994. Since then, it became one of the beacons of the live music scene in the country as FDLM grows bigger and better, especially during the emergence of pop singers and band explosions.

So that being said, Fête de la Musique Philippines will celebrate its quarter-aged milestone in such grandeur as it continues on showcasing the best of the best in the local music scene while providing a generous cross-cultural experience between the Philippine and French people.

Talk about evolution from being just a one-day affair into a month-long extravaganza, eh?

This year's FDLM will not only be visible in the usual places inside Intramuros, Makati, and Baguio, but also in the neighboring provinces of Laguna, Bulacan, Batangas Pampanga, and the island-province of Palawan. Most of the 9 main stages and 52 pocket stages will emanate on Saturday, 22 June 2019, featuring a plethora of musical acts from afternoon 'til dawn.

Hop around Makati City for your fix of music in various genres all-night long. Even the distant bars such as 121 and saGuijo will be part of this city-wide party. Aside from the multitude of rock, alternative, pop, and electronic stages, record labels Viva, O/C, and Sony will put up Fete-related events of their own during this gathering.

However, Fête de la Musique will not be a one-day spectacle as other related events took place earlier this month. The world-celebrated music event introduced a pop-up show called Music Heals featuring spirit-lifting music from nurse-rapper Fatima Palma-Loo and other artists last 8 June 2019 at Virlaine Foundation in Makati City.

Also, Fete de la Musique 2019 officially kicked off last 15 June 2019 at three separate venues: KMC Skydeck BGC, Salon de Ning, and the Rizal Open-Air Auditorium.

This Friday, 21 June 2019, one of the main stages will take place at the A-Venue Open Parking in Makati City featuring a special 25-minute performance as its main attraction. The multi-genre medley, led by Francis De Veyra, will feature a cast of performers such as Bituin Escalante, Aia de Leon, Vic Facultad, Cooky Chua, Bnayang Barrios, Tarsius, Jensen Gomez, Bea Lorenzo, Zsaris, Brass Pas Pas Pas Pas, and many more.

There will be collaborations taking place at the main stages of Makati and Intramuros.

Aside from the provincial pocket stages, Fête de la Musique will have a culminating event like no other on 29 June 2019, thanks to the indie stage organizers Docdef and Gabi Na Naman Productions. It will be an extended party like no other as Pampanga made its FDLM debut courtesy of At The Back MNL, while five FDLM stages will rock Los Banos, Laguna.

Meanwhile, Bulakenyos are in for a treat as Juan Pablo Dream will grace Pangnan Grill in Guiguinto together with Orange & Lemons and a pack-full of performing bands. Batangas will also have its Fete stage inside the La Consuelo Spring Resort.

In case you haven't been to a live music show, FDLM is the perfect chance for you to get in and experience one as admission is ABSOLUTELY FREE. Just don't be like those dickheads who jump from barricades just to get into the party, please.

But aside from providing free live music, music lovers can win round-trip tickets to France by joining the FDLM's social media contest. All it takes is to simply share a 25-second video of their fondest Fete de la Musique memories through the years.

“2019 is a big year for Fête de la Musique and we wanted to make sure that this year's event will be a special one,” said Jean-Pierre Dumont, Executive Director of Alliance Française de Manille.

The 2019 Fête de la Musique Philippines is made possible by Alliance Française de Manille, B-Side Promotions, and the Embassy of France to the Philippines, together with its co-presenters Globe Telecom and San Miguel Pale Pilsen.
