It was in September 2017 when Orange & Lemons shocked the country by returning to the Philippine music scene in such improbable fashion. It was a resurgence that came out of nowhere – or right after re-tuning their tunes from the pop band's debut album Love In The Land Of Dirty Shoes and Ice Cream.
Sans crooner McCoy Fundales, Orange & Lemons' comeback hit the limelight right away in such notoriously drastic manners with a repackaged-and-updated record and their own music festival (Moonlane Festival).
However, it was the band's Tagalog song (Hanggang Kailan) that landed them in the mainstream, so it should be a fitting move of putting another such-language track to put themselves back at the map in their own way. Enter Pag-Ibig Sa Tabing Dagat into the equation.
Imagine Bossa Nova, Kundiman, and their usual indie guitar pop sound mixed together in one single track which depicted memories of a summer love (one way or another) in a very sincere Tagalog poetry form. Also, you can imagine Sitti belting this track during the heydays of Bossa Nova in the Philippines.
Well, Orange & Lemons' experiment somehow did well. From the laid-back of harmony to the calmness of Clem's vocals. It seems to me that they upped their signature tones without the aid of going the trend of cheesy, suave or too folk. Just a straight-up, not-so-old school sounding ballad on the writing. It certainly helped that Jared Nerona's addition as their keyboardist put another trick on their sleeves; making the sound fuller than ever as a result.
If this isn't another bold step by the Bulacan-based pop band, then I don't know what it is.
Pag-Ibig Sa Tabing Dagat is the latest single by Orange & Lemons released 7 June 2019 by Lilystar Records and Darkus Music. Stream the song on Spotify and other digital platforms. Buy the song through iTunes or Bandcamp. Visit orangeandlemons.co for more information.
