What's a yearend without citing the most-talked-about posts, hashtags, and users in the world of Twitter?
For over a decade already, the micro-blogging site has enabled Filipinos to know what's happening and to speak meaningful conversations as it happens. In fact, most of the trending topics are heard first on Twitter.
Twitter has played a big part in shaping 2019, from discovering personal interests, sharing ideas and opinions, to finding the latest updates in everything that involves current events – be it sports, entertainment, or even arts, politics, lifestyle, and culture. The topics on the platforms are so diverse that the top Tweets, most-discussed hashtags, and accounts this year will surely give everyone a myriad of reactions and will hopefully inspire them to be a part of the real-life conversations.
As always, entertainment has dominated the top hashtags of Twitter this year. Popular celebrities such as Maine Mendoza, Alden Richards, Maymay Entrata, Kisses Delavin, and Edward Barber accounted for half of the most-tweeted hashtags in the Philippines. It's no surprise that these five personalities comprise half of this year's Most Tweeted About accounts in the country.
Specifically, #MaineMendoza – who rose from the ranks and beyond the Yaya Dub phenomena – moved up five spots to become the most-Tweeted hashtag in the Philippines. Apart from a loaded 2019 with her movie launches, drama performances, and brand endorsements, her fans have been consistently very much active in expressing their fondness to Maine (@mainedcm).
A radio program, a movie, and a massive ball event also became part of the big year-ender list. #DiyesIsItManila, a show that features the top 10 songs of the day, placed second; and that became a living example of how Filipinos express their interest in music.
Of course, there are also love teams in the list. #MayWard clinched the top three spots, thanks to the fans who express their support from time-to-time to Entrata and Barber's countless projects and events.
Don't forget the always-popular K-Pop here, too. Twitter Philippines collated this year's most-tweeted stuff about them, from #BTS to #BlackPink; from #EXO to #Twice; and a whole lot more in between!
While we talked about entertainment here already, how about we checked out the best Twitter-related stuff from the Philippine sports, right?
Obviously, NBA is still the most-talked-about sports user on the micro-blogging platform; while LA Lakers and LeBron James are the biggest names in the league there. Don't count, however, our sporty femme fatale out of the equation, as host Gretchen Ho and top volleyball star Alyssa Valdez round out the 5 Most Tweeted Sports Accounts in the Philippines.
While Ateneo may be the UAAP Champs in men's basketball and women's volleyball, the University of the Philippines had the loudest online cheer on the league (#UPFight) in whatever sport they may be competing with. The 2019 NBA Champions Toronto Raptors had the noisiest campaign with #WeTheNorth that became even louder during the 2019 #NBAFinals. Sorry, #LakeShow. The #PacquiaoThurman clash and #PBALabanKungLaban were also part of the list.
In related news, Rubia Sisters owned two of the Top Tweets in the Philippines in 2019. Yes, a pair of siblings have taken over the popular social networking site.
Samantha Rubia (@sammirubia) made a viral post of her singing to woo her crush and pretending to have allergies. The said post became the most retweeted post with a comment in the country this year.
Meanwhile, Brianna (@briannarubia) tweeted a video of her sister singing her heart out to The Little Mermaid’s Part of Your World. This clap saw another humorous take on how their parents show their appreciation and support to their daughter – making it the most Liked and most Retweeted Tweet in the Philippines in 2019.
Of course, since a tweet wouldn't be complete without this item in it, Twitter cited the most used emojis for 2019, with the laughing one being at the top of the list.
