Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, and Kitchie Nadal stage Secrets III for the benefit of music venue workers

04/22/2020 05:21:21 PM

Three years since the success of their sold-out concert series, Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, and Kitchie Nadal will perform for another special show this May 1st.

In a stunning announcement this past Wednesday afternoon, this triumvirate of hit singer-songwriters is teaming up with GNN (formerly known as Gabi Na Naman Productions) and Smirnoff Mule to stage a digital concert to raise funds for the employees and workers of live music venues in Metro Manila.

The show, dubbed as the third installment of their hit concert series Secrets, will be streamed live on Facebook next Friday evening (1 May 2020) at 8:00PM, as part of of the alternative rock icons’ ongoing efforts to help the music community affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as being a primer to GNN’s 5th-anniversary celebration.

“Deprived of operating to serve people with live entertainment, music venues have temporarily shut down, and are struggling to manage their overhead expenses,” said Gabi Na Naman Productions’ Milley Habito, one of the executive producers of Secrets III: An Online Concert featuring Aia, Barbie, and Kitchie.

“Thanks to the girls, we’ll be given a chance to cover some of the funds needed to support employees and workers of independent music venues and bars. We cannot imagine a vibrant, bustling music scene without these people who have dedicated their lives in helping run the gigs. The waiters, cooks, kitchen helpers, cashiers, parking attendants, food servers, tech guys, security personnel and other employees deserve our help too.”

COVID-19 has paralyzed almost every event business around the world. This includes international concerts and bar gigs due to each country's implementation of lockdown guidelines, including one that implicates cancellation of mass gatherings.

In the metropolitan, the live music scene was severely affected as operations of music halls were forced to shut down as Luzon undergoes Extreme Community Quarantine measures as ordered by the national administration. This left several owners and their employees practically jobless for the time being.

In line with Secrets, GNN said some of the confirmed beneficiaries include independent music venues such as Route 196, Mow’s, Saguijo CafĂ© & Bar, Jess and Pat’s, ‘70s Bistro, 123 Block, and Social House; with more to be announced.

The star-studded fundraiser and concert will also feature never-before-heard collaborations among the three award-winning singer-songwriters, as well as individual performances featuring their Greatest Hits and rarities.

Aia De Leon was once known for her vocal prowess and penning hitmakers such as Akap and Sundo from the band Imago in the 2000s. She then departed the band in 2013 and released her first single Tao Lang in 2015. Her presence was recently felt in a collaboration with Silent Sanctuary for the song Dambana.

After taking the vocals helm for Mojofly, Kitchie Nadal went on her own in 2005, and the breakout year proved successful with countless chart-topping hits such as Huwag na Huwag Mong Sasabihin, Bulong, and Same Ground to name a few. Nadal's recent release is an album titled Landas last January, marking her first since the album Malaya in 2014 and the single With Whom in 2015.

Over the years (and even decades), Barbie Almalbis is one seasoned singer-songwriter. She made hits during her heydays with Hungry Young Poets in the late '90s; flourished further on her Cradle in the 2000s, and her name as a solo act has been one of the attributes to what has been a mid-2000s OPM band explosion. She released her EP named Tigre last June 2019.

Secrets was first staged at the Music Museum in December 2016. Its sold-out success prompted both the artists and GNN to wage a repeat show three months later, or on February 2017.
