Indie pop act Paper Satellites just released its first record in two years, and it featured all-Filipino tracks as part of their collaboration with BABYBLUE.
ONODERA, which Paper Satellites claim as 'isang kwentong pagmamahal' (a love story), is a 5-track EP released by the band under Lilystars Records – their first major group release since the Manila Meltdown album two years ago. This extended play includes previously released single Dapithapon, the title track itself Onodera, and three other songs which make up the lyrical stories of this record: Alipin, Dama, and Paggising.
In a statement, the East Manila-based band described ONODERA as their musically inspired take from the likes of 500 Days of Summer, which definitely sets them apart from their intensely loud festive selves.
“Onodera is about being intensely and passionately in love with someone or something, being severely hurt by expectations, and learning how to accept that some things are simply out of our control.”
Paper Satellites also braved challenges that further unleashed their potential for creativity. “The Onodera EP serves as an exercise for us to branch out into previously uncharted territories for the band. It is our first time collaborating with another artist outside our defined genre for a whole record, it is our first time to write full Tagalog songs, and it is also our first time to record and produce our works in the confines of our homes, limited to whatever equipment available to us.” The band is hopeful that they're “kind of hoping that it’ll give listeners the same feeling they’ll get when they watch a Makoto Shinkai movie.”
But apart from penning randomly timed broken and sappy-sounding tunes – and crafting the sound virtually almost all the time – the quartet teamed up with BABYBLUE to do more synth and sound design works, which helped them achieve their objectives in making the EP.
“Collaborating with BABYBLUE opened more possibilities and creative ways to arrange songs and produce sounds in a way we would never have thought of,” Paper Satellites said of BABYBLUE. “We adopted a mindset of having fun with the production and then figure out how to play it live later.”
ONODERA was released this past Friday midnight on all digital music streaming platforms via Lilystars Records. Paper Satellites, a four-man pop band from East Manila, comprises Jyle Macalintal (vocals, guitars), Paulo Carpio (bass, synths), Aaron Escueta (drums), Martin Cruz (guitars, synths), with collaborators for this EP: Leone Requilman a.k.a. BABYBLUE (synths, sound design elements) and Junia Mei Moises (additional vocals for Dapithapon).
To celebrate the release, Paper Satellites and BABYBLUE will also have a special night on Sunday, 17 November 2024, at Mow's Bar in Quezon City featuring themselves alongside guest artists Pikunin, Kino1998, likewise2000, and Catboy Jeepney Drivers.
