The Scene Around: Ely Buendia Method Adaptor Launch

11/29/2024 07:07:50 PM

It's another Friday night in Mandala Park last November, and fans of the legendary music icon Ely Buendia, who just turned 54 earlier that month, released his first solo album in nearly two and a half decades. So, imagine that he released Wanted Bedspacer when he was still 30 years old and still riding the coattails of the success of his band Eraserheads at that time, eh?

The difference from what it has been 24 years ago was this time around, Ely had Offshore Music Philippines, the label he established in 2016. That's aside from still making waves from his other projects such as The Mongols, Pupil, Apartel, and even his solo project (although he wound up releasing batches of singles) during the entire long stretch, especially when he split from the Heads in 2002. Buendia also worked with the late Master Rapper for an album that was eventually released a year after Francis Magalona's death. And on top of that, The Eraserheads are touring across the globe following the rocking success of their third reunion concert in 2022.

Some would say it has been a different phase of life from what it was during their heydays; because Ely's label didn't just stick around bands that somehow cater to the similar preferences of the guy.  Offshore Music's current roster comprises a diversity of sounds which deemed more of being hip and young -- a far evolution from being just a bunch of soulful rocking ones in the indie music scene. That said, no wonder why they tapped Alyson, Carousel Casualties, Ligaya Escueta, and Aviators to be the front acts for EB himself.

Here's the thing about this monumental concert: Method Adaptor launch showcased how the legendary musician currently operates on his musicality – more present and ever. It featured no shades of his typical self, even with the lineup of his usual suspects like Pat Sarabia (drums) and Jerome Velasco (guitars) joining him on stage like the old times. Moreover, the night showcased nothing but Ely and the band performing all of the songs from this album – and WITHOUT any of his hit songs from the past, be it previous EB tracks, Pupil, or even Eraserheads.

Does it look like a challenging night for Ely and his crew at Offshore Music? Probably yes, because it's a night full of rarities despite having three singles off this album. And truth be told: Ely's newest works are damn good, a testament to how far he soldiered on despite massive clamors from his old fans who remain stuck in nothing but nostalgia. Yeah, y'all people should give him a chance to listen to his other creations, simply because they still have the same writing even if they don't sound like an Eheads kind of pop rock. At present, Tagpi-Tagping Piraso, Bulakak Sa Buwan, and Kontrabando, are just three of the songs that ring a bell to the listeners now.
