69 Filipino songs that rocked my life in 2010s (Part 7)

01/30/2020 08:42:56 PM

It's a shame that it took me two months to finish this personal project. I initially had this in mind since late November and worked on the draft by mid-December. Anyway, here it goes...

Ten years ago, I tried coming up with a list of my favorite songs of the decade here in this blog. Unfortunately, I ended up shelving it as I got more busy with college studies and post-disaster recovery.

Fast-forward to present, I became a wanderer in the locality's live music scene – a  far cry from the early years where I dig more of mainstream and foreign stuff.  Though I'm not hating at all, because exciting times took place during the 2010s.  K-Pop has ascended to even greater heights, while US & UK stuff still fares well, respectively.

The Philippine music scene, however, saw another band explosion that paved the way to "hugot" and "swabe" music. The bar was raised once again, as quality music reached mainstream consciousness, thanks to the much-improved songwriting process, social media buzz, and some crowd-drawing events.

It was in this decade where I explored more often than relying on the medium. At first, I tried digging a lot of songs over Spotify (and less on the radio) since 2014.  Then in 2013, I first attended a bar gig – and two years later, it finally became a habit for me to 'go out and listen' for almost every week.

(This list comprises mostly of songs that went to the airwaves and podiums in 2015-2019. Also, these may not be the best songs that ever made, but I do recommend you to give them a try -- in no particular order.)

69 Filipino songs that rocked my life in 2010s (Part 4)

Ten years later, here I am compiling the nices bunch among the decade full of best local music. There we saw a shock pop turning things around, as well as one notable act putting up an all-English album, a plethora of emerging bands in the mid-2010s, and a former frontman standing on his own.

The Scene Around: JLE Music LIVE #2

05/27/2019 12:16:38 AM

It sucks that I rarely wrote about gigs in my blog anymore. Well, actually, it's terrible that I wasn't able to post something new here at The SlickMaster's Files.

The Scene Around: Prelude To 28

01/06/2019 11:25:40 PM

One of the surprising plot twists that took place in the past year was pulling off (FINALLY!!!) a birthday gig. Yes, it took place after being stuck on the shelf for three years.

I initially made thoughts about organizing a birthday party in my own way in 2015 but to no avail. A year later, I was this close to booking bands and venue – until I realized that I don't have the budget to execute everything, I withdrew everything. The same thing occurred in 2017.

On a random night in August 2018, I was approached by one of the newest young peeps in the prod scene. Karen, who manages At The Back MNL, offered a deal that I almost refused – to organize the much-wanted birthday party of my life.

The Scene Around: saGuijo Presents

09/03/17 11:21:47 AM

It's strange to notice we have two consecutive 'long weekends' staged at the month of August. Well, yes, but it's undeniable that it rolls in our favor because rest... ya know.

While I am supposed to hit down South last August 26, I was offered to partake on a role that I can never (ever!) refuse. Because... why should I?! Is this even a damn valid question?.

PlayBack: We Are Imaginary – A Good Kind Of Sad (music video)

04/14/2017 08:41:12 PM

It was a different concept, apart from what this pop band's music video more known of – full of imagery, lighted by humor.

The Scene Around: Paranoid City "Metropolitan" Album Launch

05/01/2017 10:11:40 PM

Probably six years is a very long wait for any music personality or group to release a record comprised of a number of his/her works, especially original songs. And somehow, it was worth the long, grueling, test of time for eleven times out of ten.

This past Friday, though, was no exemption, as Paranoid City finally welcomed everyone to the place they'd like to be known as “Your METROPOLITAN SynthPop Destination.” Yes, after 2011's Viewfinder Dreams, the band just launched their sophomore album titled Metropolitan at SaGuijo, Makati City.

The Scene Around: Docdef 1??

10/25/2016 03:14:35 AM

Seems since In D' Flow, Docdef Productions has seemingly lost count of their number of gigs slated, eh? No wonder they have put up the 1?? a  la slot machine. But without pun intended, it was a last ditch decision on my end to swing by Route 196 after storming by Black Kings Bar for the Monster Indie Ground tour.

PlayBack: We Are Imaginary – Death To Romanticism

Death to Romanticism album cover (Photo credits: Facebook)
Talk about the goodness of fusing sounds of indie rock and pop, while retaining the same good vibrations infused inside (yes, amidst the varying emotions when you read it the most); and this isn't just an evolution of the band from their identity to the craft.

And out of eleven tracks, here are some notable tracks which caught my listening attention the most.

The Scene Around: Bigwasounds

07/04/2016 05:46:36 PM

At the height where Baron Geisler and Kiko Matos were the talk of the town, We Are The Underdogs Productions had a cool event of their own (though it was done in a non-violent way amidst heavyweight-comprised lineup).

Playback: We Are Imaginary – Pencil Me In

11/19/2015 5:27:17 PM

Maybe I am missing a lot in dealing with choices, especially when it comes to hearing music. At one point of my life, I listened to my copy of the Jack Daniel’s On Stage compilation where this track became part of the 14-track CD.
