The Fall and Rise of Mad Cat Midnight

05/15/2017 11:18:30 PM

I know: it's been two weeks since the last time we have seen a sudden turn of events. And the thing is: it's such a good thing that this talk show was on the roll once again since last week. We barely need a variety of programs that caters to more daring yet intellectual stuff than just hearing the drama of life stories, love problems, and even dating encounters.

While obviously, AM radio owns up to a lot of informative shiznit and FM radio boasts a majority portion of romance and sex, few are the programs like Mad Cat Midnight wherein they live up to their tagline: that is having interesting people talk about interesting stories. That's also apart from having Heard on Thursdays and (sometimes) Boys Night Out.

And probably this hasn't been much of a talked-about news on FM broadcasting in late April, but it was a sudden announcement that triggered a wildfire for some listeners like yours truly: the talk show format was suspended until then-further notice (and turns out, it end up like a title of that romcom move: Two-weeks notice).

Still, it drew the ire. But what could be the factor in such?

On-Air: Mad Cat Midnight with TTS

05/14/2017 06:01:24 PM

It's funny that John Joe told us that he got a hate message in the Facebook page of his radio show in Jam 88.3; like “wait, for real?!”

On Air: Indie Nation with BennyBunnyBand

04/14/2017 08:55:14 PM

Indie Nation premiered on Home Radio 97.9 during that early January; making it another item to join a trend of promoting Philippine music at this age and time. It's quite funny that it also marked the first time I dropped by on a radio station once again after a very long time. Well, at least to support my friends and this kind of scene as well.

On Air: Mad Cat Midnight with Paranoid City

04/14/2017 09:15:13 PM

Synth pop band Paranoid City guested in Jam 88.3's Mad Cat Midnight last March 23, and when you thought of these titos for being a boring kind compared to those wild metal-heads and young broods, think again: they can entertain like your typical bandista idols.

Finale Friday

07/29/2016 03:35:19 PM

It's a sad day for Philippine radio; perhaps another heart-breaking milestone since NU 107's sudden demise in 2010, where fans gathered outside the station's vicinity and waged a street rally in commemoration of its run lasting a legendary 17 years.

Magic Madness

First heard this station on my old-but-digital PIONEER component player. It was a Friday afternoon, and they were playing music from the 1980s; one of my old favorite decades, thanks to my cousin and his collection of tapes as well as Grand Theft Auto Vice City.

The next time around I tuned in, it was a Sunday night fill of slow jams I used to hear from my sister's 'burned' CDs. Late 90s to present; 112 to Boyz II Men. Suddenly, that made my interest shift from masa to the cliché ones.

Yes, that was the time I made the BIG SWITCH to Magic 89.9.

Playback: Gaano ka-Pinoy ang Beauty Contest sa Pilipinas?

3/16/2015 4:28:30 PM

Since some people are still having signs of a hangover from the recent Binibining Pilipinas, here’s something I’d like to share with you: a 16-minute audio clip from that epic (now-defunct) program named The Disenchanted Kingdom.

Say, this one seems timely, eh?

Just My Opinion: The Sudden Resignation?!

3/11/2015 12:01:20 PM

Screengrab from Youtube
It was a random speculation that was confirmed by a former-DZRH radio announcer yesterday: Mr. John Gemperle, much known as the popular radio personality Papa Jack, resigned from being a decade-long job at 90.7 Love Radio as its DJ.

Missing The Disenchanted Kingdom

9/21/2014 4:47:24 PM

I have been a huge fan of Philippine radio for almost half my age already, especially during my college years when some of the stations turned backs on the Contemporary Hit (CHR) type. There’s no more Campus Radio on 97.1 WLS FM; it’s been a very long while since 93.9 KC FM switched letters to a single I; and Magic 89.9, though still remained as the one of the top cliché FM stations aside from RX 93.1 and 99.5 RT, still made a big switch in their programming during the mid-2000s.

Since then, most of us listeners have our ears glued in to the likes of The Morning Rush and Good Times with Mo in the morning (plus, Sam vs. Sam as then-third alternative), and Boys Night Out, other RX radio specials, and The Brewrats during nighttime. Well, during the the latter part of the decade, before NU107 bade goodbye after being the premier rock music station for almost three decades—plus The Brewrats on their stay at U92, another primetime program ushered by the name of The Disenchanted Kingdom.

Alaala Ng The Brewrats

8/10/2013 12:15:44 PM

Radio Love Talkin’

12:43:47 AM | 5/18/2013 | Saturday

Let’s talk about love. Err, I mean, radio talk about love. Love has two faces. And I’m talking about Love Notes and True Love Conversations.

Throwback Saturdays

4:31:32 AM | 4/13/2013 | Saturday

Being still a radio fanatic for more than a decade already, I used to grow up listening to the music of the past, especially if it sounds like it was way back from my childhood days. And it’s been a long time when old-soul type of people like me missed those 90s tracks, and have been craving for them to get aired on radio again.

Besides, who will deny that the 90s music was one of the last best things ever heard nowadays? Well, two stations used to offer a playlist consisting of the music coming from the very last decade of the second millennium.

Missing the Old Campus Radio

03/13/2013 01:00 PM

For people who’d been aging at somewhere between my generations, a student’s life will never be complete without being hooked up on the FM radio station which is known as Campus Radio. Yes, even for once on their respective lives.

Well, I’m actually a late-bloomer when it comes to things like this, and in fact, it was during the 2000s when I only managed to listen to cliché radio stations, and I mean by the radio stations that caters to the youth (and this was the real “young, wild and free” deal). Magic 89.9 was one, RX was also an epic one (thanks to the likes of The Morning Rush), KC FM was also an urban legend before it was reformatted into iFM, 99.5 RT was the real music authority to the mainstream pop fans. And so were 103.5 K-Lite for the alternative genre and NU 107 for rock. But among them all, there is one station that was already stamped on the listeners’ ears and minds: it was the Campus Radio.

For “High-Quality Entertainment” Sakes?

That’s why we’re here.”

Oops! Teka lang.  Tama ba narinig ko? Para magbigay ng “high-quality entertainment?”

NU 107 After 2 Years…

11/08/2012, 12:27 PM

No More "The Best Music on the Planet?" The Quest On The Next Brand Under The 99.5 FM dial.

I know, I know. I am not even at the middle level of being an avid listener of this station. I don’t even know what made me wrote this piece. But being a radio gaga kid for almost half of my life, it saddens to hear goodbye on the station that you patronized even at least once upon a time. And all I know is that 99.5 RT was one of the stations I have turned into when I lived once at province (Yes, I heard them clearly even if I’m 70 kilometers away up North-Northeast from Luneta)

I never saw it coming until a disc jockey named Inka posted something on her Facebook account, encouraging everyone in her network to listen on her show the RT 30 countdown for one last time this coming Friday, October 19, 2012— Something that drew the ire on side of her listeners that the station 99.5 RT will be leaving once again. And also, drawing questioned thoughts for the ones who patronize the station like “Where will they turn into next?” And “Where can we find the best music on the planet then,” aside from the bounds of YouTube, Soundcloud, internet radio sites and… anywhere else at the World Wide Web?

Many of us think of this one very usual resort question: Another cliché FM station going masa type? Something that is really… (I repeat) really disappointing for the side of the music lovers, radio listeners, and DJ’s fans. Something that Inka denied via her Facebook comment.

Recovering the Pieces, But Not Anymore For the Dream… (Confessions of a long-time-but-no-more wannabe music disc jockey)
